Up-Close Aircraft Day

Saturday, February 9th

KC-97l Stratofreighter

For the upcoming “Up-Close Aircraft Day” guests will see the museum’s KC-97, an aerial refueling tanker, designed from the transport version of the B-29 Superfortress. C-97’s had twice the internal volume of a B-29 due to an added underside fuselage section that gave the aircraft the ability to carry 130 fully-equipped troops or 80 stretchers in pressurized comfort. Refueling tanks and a boom was fitted to create the USAF first generation air-to-air refueler.

The museum's KC-97, serial number 53-363, was manufactured in 1956 at the Boeing Aircraft plant in Seattle, WA. Delivered to the United States Air Force on September 26, 1956 the aircraft was assigned to squadrons in Louisiana, Newfoundland Canada, New Jersey, Indiana, Oklahoma, Florida, and Texas before being retired in 1976.  March Field Air Museum volunteers flew 53-363 to the museum in 1980.

Every second Saturday through 2019, a different aircraft is featured monthly during "Up-Close Aircraft Days" at the March Field Air Museum! Guests have the opportunity for a close look – sometimes climbing stairs to see directly into the cargo bay or cockpit, other times even climbing aboard. The new Up-Close Aircraft Days takes place every second Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Included with regular museum admission.
