The March Field Air Museum began as the dream of one man who, in 1979 realized that March Air Force Base represented a precious legacy of history, technology, dedication and patriotism that had to be preserved. Fortunately, that man was in position to act on his belief. He was Gen. James P. Mullins, then Commander of the 15th Air Force. In 1980, the March Field Museum Foundation was formed by a group of retired Air Force personnel and men and women from Riverside who shared Gen. Mullins vision.

In April of 1996 the Museum transitioned from an Air Force supported operation to a stand alone civilian institution run by the March Field Museum Foundation. The Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) organization, has clearly defined its mission for the Museum: Preservation and restoration of its historic aircraft and artifacts is an obvious one, but equally important is a basic commitment to the education of our youth. March Field Air Museum is more than a historic site and a collection of warplanes and artifacts. It is a guardian of the heritage of the magnificent contribution of the men and women who have defended our freedom for most of the 20th Century.
